The Resurrection: 1 Corinthians 15
Transcription of a 1988 Homily given at Shantivanam by Fr. Bede Griffiths. This testimony of St. Paul to the Resurrection is very important. As you will remember, the first account we have of the Resurrection before the Gospels were written is this letter to the Corinthians. That is a very important testimony. Then he goes on to explain the significance of the Resurrection and he connects it with the resurrection of all people, “if Christ is preached as raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead?” It is all based on St. Paul’s idea of solidarity. Many people don’t realize this today, the solidarity of mankind; all humanity forms this one body and that body of Man falls into sin and is divided, disintegrated, and Christ in the Resurrection reunites humanity. It is not simply one individual person rising from the dead; Jesus in rising raises humanity with him. It is the idea of solidarity of one living organism, a whole with many parts and all united in one body and in one head. So that is the secret of the Resurrection. “If there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised”; the two simply go together. It is very important that the resurrection of Jesus is not simply the resuscitation of the corpse, as they say, he got out of the tomb and walked about. It is the raising of human nature from its present state of sin and suffering and death into the new life: the Resurrection, New Creation, and life in God. It is the passage from life in this world to life in God; Jesus passes through from this world to God and brings all humanity with him. It is the solidarity of all. So, he goes on to say if that is not so, if Christ is not raised, then you are still in sin, your faith if futile. It is very important; there is no question for him, you cannot separate Christ from the body of humanity. He dies for all. Then, if that is not so, “those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If for this life only we have hoped in Christ, we are of all men most” miserable. I think it is very important; today people think so much of social justice and concern for the poor and these things are extremely necessary but they are only temporary. To help people in this life is alright but it doesn’t take them very far. What the Gospel offers is eternal life, beyond this present life people have to know that eternal life is present to them, life in God is the end of humanity, not simply to be living the happy life here. So then he says, “in fact Christ has been raised from the dead.” And then he brings out the whole thing: “For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.” “Adam” means more than a proper name. “Adam” is simply the Hebrew from “Man.” Adam is Man, humanity. Humanity falls in Adam and is divided, disintegrated; and Jesus is the second Adam, the “new Man,” who reunites humanity in himself. It is very important to see this is the whole context of the Gospel. It is humanity fallen into sin and divided; humanity regained and reintegrated, restored to life in God. That is what the Gospel is about. And Jesus is the one who redeems and reconciles and realizes humanity in God. Then it says, “But each in his own order: Christ the first fruits, then at his coming those who belong to Christ.”. “Then comes the end, when he delivers the kingdom to God the Father after destroying every rule … . The last enemy to be destroyed is death.” We are still exposed to death just the same as ever, but we know that he has gone beyond death and we, also, in and through Him, pass beyond death, we go through death into eternal life. “When all things are subjected to him, then the Son himself will also be subjected to him who put all things under him, that God may be everything to every one.” Jesus gathers humanity into unity himself and reunites humanity in God and all creation, all humanity returns to God in Christ. That is the goal of the Gospel. It is very important to see this cosmic Christ, and the call of the whole creation is fulfilled in Christ and unless we see that our religion becomes very limited; it would be just a Christian people who are a small group of people in the world, and this is the redemption of humanity and of the whole creation.That is the real meaning of the Gospel.
